GPS Part I
I
use a Garmin 12xl, handheld GPS on trails and while exploring. Deciding which
of the available GPS units to purchase was difficult. A friend and I began looking
and comparing features and capabilities. We also searched for information on
the net. While our primary uses would be different we each selected the Garmin
12xl. This unit has the parallel tracking ability.
Since purchasing my Garmin 12xl, I have upgraded to a model with a newer version of software. The upgrade was accomplished by calling Garmin service for a return authorization and then sending my unit back to them with a check to cover the upgrade. My GPS was upgraded and returned in about 4 weeks with the latest software, including the city database. Click on the photo to see the Garmin product description page.
I use my GPS to find direction and more importantly to note where certain roads, sites, or intersections are located. The Garmin 12xl works great. While exploring backroads of Utah, I developed a method which I use to help me keep track of position information and trail notes. It is a simple thing to connect the GPS to a computer and download the track log, routes and waypoints after a weekend of exploration. If I am headed back to a favorite area a couple of mouse clicks is all it takes to upload waypoints and routes to the GPS memory.
GPS Part II
My GPS is powered off the vehicle battery and sits in a custom fabricated mount. Finding suitable space to fit a new gadget is always a challenge in a CJ-5. My custom mount is actually a factory mount modified with three suction cups and a little file work to fit the 12xl in from the opposite direction. The mount sticks to the window above the dash and hangs down so the GPS slides up into the mount.
