Great Western Supply
Warehouse Shelf Building Project
This is an approximately 30-day project to build product shelves for a wholesale plumbing warehouse. The building is nearing completion. Move-in is scheduled for early March.
The following pictures show the shelf building progress and possibly some of the jigs and set-ups I've used to make the process go a bit faster.
I am using the SA-276 strut material from Cooper B-Line. This material weighs about .78 lb/ft and comes in 12 foot sticks. the sticks are bundled in groups of ten pieces with 10 of those bundles banded together. There are four bands to a lift. So, each lift weights about 7488 pounds. I started with 39,000 feet or a bit over four lifts of the strut material.
The majority of the shelves are 6 foot long and 30 inches deep. The 12 foot sticks are cut to the required length. For strength each of the shelf supports is doubled and there is a u-shaped support running the length of each shelf as well.
We began with 4 lifts and a small bundle totalling 39,000 feet of the B-Line SA-276 strut material.
Material cutting has begun. Notice that the stack on the right forefont is getting smaller. In the background is the setup jig table I made from the strut material.
The shelf being built just above is number 3 or 4. Many more to come.
Looking west across the jig table at the first 10 shelves.
The main offices are in the background. Notice the empty warehouse. The darker area above the sheetrock wall is the mezzanine area located above the offices.

Update: March 8, 2008
This view was taken from near the east overhead door looking across the shelf assembly area, past the growing collection of shelves.
Note the mezzanine in the far background.
Mezzanine view of the shelves which are grouped here waiting for the okay to move them into position in their rows.
Looking back at the 'west wall' and the mezzanine railing. Receiving is to the left and the will call counter is about 75 feet to the right.
Empty shelves and nearly completed counter. Move in starts in a couple days.
Looking out over the 'west wall' at the 'south 40' from the mezzanine level.
This last photo was taken on Friday morning, March 7th, after some of the black maleable fitting stock was put away.
After positioning a few more of the 7 foot tall shelves and installing the sheeting my job was basically done.
Feel free to bookmark this page. I hope you'll come back often.
